Tewksbury Democrats Values Statement
We believe in liberty and the guaranteed rights of all individuals. We hold dear the institutions of democratic government, at the local, state, and federal levels. We believe that, with liberty, comes the obligation of all citizens to participate in the life of the community in which we live, and to preserve the environment that makes this place special to us — for our own sake, for the sake of those of our neighbors who are accustomed to deriving enjoyment from its beauty, and for the sake of those who will come after us.
We will always welcome alliances with those who share our values, regardless of party affiliation or organizational objective. We will always be willing to review the positions that we take as political partisans, in the context of changing events and social currents. We will dedicate ourselves to listen as well as to articulate our particular views, and to seek as many ways as possible to promote the healthy exchange of opinions and views.
Democratic Values Statement
We affirm the principle contained in the Declaration of Independence that all people are created equal,
with the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It is therefore incumbent on government to provide a healthy and secure environment in which the people may flourish. Government is further required to promote a legal system that ensures equal justice for all, free of political interference and to foster equal opportunity of access to education and employment.
We fully concur with the guarantees provided in the Bill of Rights,
and we advocate for the elimination of bias at all levels of society. We believe that in a healthy democracy all should have the right to free expression of opinion and to full participation in the workings of government. Such participation should be welcomed, and all who are willing to be involved should be treated with courtesy.
It is also incumbent on us as a people to be concerned
not only for ourselves and our own dependents, but to be concerned as well for the welfare of those who have no one to provide for them or who have been relegated to the margins, for whatever reason. A flourishing society requires that we try to bring as many as possible into the enterprise of successful nationhood.
We declare that government should stay abreast of global events and scientific changes
that may affect the well-being of our people and to participate in deliberations on how to meet new challenges in both spheres. On the local level, we propose scheduling forums, free of politics, on issues that affect the entire community so that political leaders may be fully informed on current needs and opinions.
We believe that it is important to promote bipartisanship
in addressing local concerns, while encouraging partisan activity that draws people of a common persuasion together to explore matters of policy and political philosophy. We support vigorous efforts to bring citizens on all sides of the political spectrum more fully into the electoral process.
FinalIy, we are absolutely opposed to the involvement of any person in political activity for personal gain.
