New Jersey voters can click the link below and see their voter registration record to verify they are registered at the correct location.

Having been a registered voter in the past is no guarantee that your registration is still valid.  Voter rolls are cleaned on a regular basis, mostly due to inactivity or receiving information that a voter moved.  All normal legal processes. I can see that Tewksbury has fewer registered voters now than we did 4 months ago.  It doesn’t hurt to check.

The deadline to register to vote is October 15th.  Registration can be done on-line, in-person at the Board of Elections in Flemington or via mail.  Now that we are so close to the deadline, in-person or on-line is probably more reliable than the US mail.

To register on-line (there are some restrictions on who can register on-line), use this link …   https://voter.svrs.nj.gov/register

To bring a registration form to the Hunterdon County Board of Elections or to mail it in, here is a link to the form https://nj.gov/state/elections/voter-registration.shtml#vrf

Early voting is available to all voters at a few specific locations in the county. You will receive the exact same ballot at these early voting locations as you would voting in Tewksbury on election day.

Tewksbury voters can vote at any of these locations.

Many of us find Vote-By-Mail the easiest way to vote as business trips, illness, and kid’s events won’t get in the way.

The formal deadline for sending in an application to get a Vote-By-Mail ballot is Oct 29th.  However, counting on the USPS to get your ballot to you after 10/29 and before 11/5, might be a bit risky.  We recommend that you get your Vote-By-Mail application into the Board of Election before 10/25.  After that, using the Early Voting (above) might be easier.

Once you have your ballot, you can vote three ways.

  • Put it in any of the Hunterdon County official ballot Drop Boxes.  There is a Drop Box at the Tewksbury Municipal building.  It is available 24×7 up until 8pm on election day. Wave to the camera that is always watching the box!
  • Put it in the mail.  It must be received by the Board of Election or postmarked with a date on or before election day November 5th.   It should be noted that not all mail is postmarked with a date, so it is recommended to make sure to mail it early enough that it isn’t a worry.
  • Deliver directly to the Board of Elections in Flemington.  You will need to show ID if you deliver directly.

When you vote-by-mail is also important.  When your ballot is received by the Board of Elections, the campaigns and local officials are notified that you voted.  They are NOT notified how you voted…ever.  Once the campaigns know you voted, they will stop calling, texting, and door knocking to try to get your vote.  That’s a win-win, no bother for you and the campaign can focus on someone else.

There is one more benefit. Occasionally voters make a mistake in how they return the envelope, most often a different signature style.  The sooner your ballot is in, the more time you have to fix the issue. This is known as curing.  Curing was a big deal in 2020 with lots of ballots needing to be cured.  So far this year, none of the ~200 Tewksbury Dems who have already voted has needed to have their ballot cured

About 60% of voting still occurs on election day. For most of us, it is an enjoyable opportunity to express our opinion with a vote.  For some others, it may present a challenge.  We will include some notes on those challenges here to help those voters.

Voting is open from 6am to 8pm.  New Jersey ends voting at 8pm.  There is sometimes confusion because New York ends at 9pm.

Your polling location will be printed on the sample ballot that will be mailed to you on Oct 23rd.  If you lose your ballot and can’t remember where to go, I suggest going to one of the polling locations in town and getting assistance.  Our polling locations are the Mountainville Meeting Hall, Zion Lutheran Church Meeting Hall, and the Oldwick First Aid and Rescue Squad building.

If there is a line at 8pm, anyone who is already in line at 8pm should be allowed to vote.  The Tewksbury Democrats will have a Poll Watcher at each polling location at the end of the day.  In the extremely unlikely event that there is an issue, make them aware of it.  You can identify them by the badges they will be wearing.  These badges are issued by the Hunterdon County Board of Elections.  Of course, making sure you are there long before 8pm makes this point moot.

If a voter believes they are registered, but for any reason do not appear in the rolls being used by the poll workers, they are entitled to vote using a provisional ballot.  See the quote from the NJ election website below.

A provisional ballot is cast by a voter whose eligibility to vote cannot be confirmed at the polls on Election Day or if they have applied for a vote-by-mail ballot. If, after the election, it is determined that the voter who cast the provisional ballot was eligible to vote, the ballot will be counted.

The determination of a provision a ballot’s eligibility is made by the Board of Elections with legal teams from both parties observing.  Training for poll worker explains that everyone requesting to vote should vote and eligibility determined later.
